The Southdown sheep is one of the oldest sheep breeds in Great Britain. It got its name from the area in southern England, the South Downs, where the ancestors of today’s Southdowns grazed for many centuries.
The fibers of the Southdowns are characterized by a relatively short staple length, and they are also very elastic and robust. This makes them the ideal fibers for durable yet comfortable yarns. The icing on the cake: The fibers of this breed felt very poorly and can be machine washed on a wool cycle – completely without superwash treatment. Exactly what we’re looking for in the perfect natural sock yarn!
Since it doesn’t tend to felt, you can make wonderful socks, hats, or gloves from it that even tolerate a wool wash cycle in the washing machine. This pure virgin wool yarn from Southdown sheep is very elastic and feels completely different from classic sock yarns. It’s grippier than what you know from Merino yarn, as it’s Southdown yarn. It fluffs up incredibly after knitting & washing and feels grippy yet comfortable. The final stitch definition of Southdown only shows after washing.
