It got its name from the area in southern England, the South Downs, where the ancestors of today&#8217;s Southdowns grazed for many centuries.<br \/>\nThe fibers of the Southdowns are characterized by a <strong>relatively short staple length<\/strong>, and they are also <strong>very elastic and robust<\/strong>. This makes them the <strong>ideal fibers for durable yet comfortable yarns<\/strong>. The icing on the cake: The fibers of this breed <strong>felt very poorly<\/strong> and can be machine washed on a wool cycle \u2013 completely without superwash treatment. Exactly what we&#8217;re looking for in the <strong>perfect natural sock yarn<\/strong>!    <\/p>\n<p>Since it <strong>doesn&#8217;t tend to felt<\/strong>, you can make <strong>wonderful socks, hats, or gloves<\/strong> from it that even tolerate a wool wash cycle in the washing machine. This pure virgin wool yarn from Southdown sheep is very elastic and feels completely different from classic sock yarns. It&#8217;s grippier than what you know from Merino yarn, as it&#8217;s Southdown yarn. It fluffs up incredibly after knitting &#038; washing and feels grippy yet comfortable.
